The Right to Generate

There are a number of energy projects being proposed by TNEB to help meet the ever increasing demand.

The company operates four thermoelectric power stations.

  • Ennore Thermal Power Station (ETPS-450MW) (2×60, 3×110)
  • Mettur thermal station MTPS 1440MW (MTPS), with 4×210 and 1x600MW
  • North Chennai Thermal Power Station (North Chennai Thermal Power Station, 1830 MW) 3x210MW and 2x600MW.
  • Tuticorin Thermal Power Station (5x210MW

The company that operates the large wind energy stations is

  • Tamil Nadu accounts for around 29 per cent of India’s total wind power capacity.

Distribution

The Rajiv Gandhi Grameen Vidyutikaran Yojana was launched to electrify all homes. Decentralized distribution would only be allowed if grid connectivity wasn’t possible, or if it was too expensive. Tamil Nadu never took advantage of this option to share its electricity with other states.

Under the 11th Five Year Plan, the Ministry of Power has launched a scheme called the Accelerated Power Development and Reforms Program. It aims to ensure a reliable and quality power supply and reduce energy losses.
